This Is Us absolutely revels in blindsiding its fans – usually by tricking us into thinking we’re watching one time period, when really we’re getting a glimpse of another – but the season-five finale really did drop one of the biggest shocks of the series yet.
At the beginning of the episode, we saw Kevin seemingly preparing his vows for his marriage to Madison. However, as it was later revealed, their wedding didn’t actually go ahead.
What we were really watching was a four-year flash-forward, in which Kevin was preparing to officiate for his sister Kate’s wedding. But it’s not Toby she’s marrying, it’s her frosty music teacher boss Phillip. Cue audible gasps.
Revealing how these events transpired will no doubt take up a significant chunk of the final season, Chris Sullivan, who plays Toby, said he had known about the eventual split for a while, with the couple’s widening “communication gap” playing a huge role.
As we also saw in the flash-forward, Nicky is now married to a mystery lady and things between Kevin and Madison, who share twins together, seem to be pretty amicable. Are they still together in some capacity or have they simply learned to be friends?
Then, of course, there’s the matter of the Pearson matriarch’s dwindling health. It was back in season four that we got a glimpse of an ailing Rebecca, seemingly on her deathbed at a distant point in the future. We know that her dementia will worsen in the coming years – to the point that she doesn’t even recognise her own son Randall – and we’re fully expecting those scenes to be a difficult watch.
Series creator Dan Fogelman has indeed teased some heart-wrenching moments for the final season, telling EW : “There’s one storyline that’s one of our stakes in the ground for season sic that when I speak about it, my eyes start welling up with tears. And I’m not a crier.”
But there’ll also be plenty of happiness to go around, with Kevin actor Justin Hartley revealing that the Pearsons will end up in “a really good place”.
“From what I gather from what we’ve shot, it seems they’re in a really good place,” he told TV Insider. “They all seem to be dancing around like happy idiots. Hopefully, they’re all in a really good place. They’ll have drama getting there, I’m sure.”
