His father was a talented jazz dancer who initially shuffled between jobs at Fort Sill, Oklahoma before joining the United States Army. He was sent to France during World War II. His father was discharged with honors from the US Army on September 1, 1945. Upon his return, Al Hendrix legally changed his son's name to James Marshall Hendrix in 1946. Al Hendrix and Lucille were both going through a rough patch in their marriage and then they divorced in 1951. Hendrix was just nine years old when his parents divorced. He lost his mother at the age of fifteen. His mother died of liver cirrhosis on February 2, 1958, due to his excessive drinking habits.
