It has been a matter of debate among fans of The Batman whether the sequel to the DC blockbuster should include Dick Grayson as Robin.
A flurry of tweets poured in from Bat-family enthusiasts over whether or not Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight needs a sidekick. Arguments in favor of adding Dick Grayson to The Batman 2 include how well it ties in with co-writer/director Matt Reeves of many of the themes introduced in the first film. Pro-Robin Camp also points to Batman: The Long Halloween sequel Dark Victory, as an example of how the character could function in the more grounded universe of The Batman.
Fans opposed to Robin's inclusion in The Batman sequel argue that it is too early to introduce the character to the fledgling franchise. They also believe that expanding the supporting cast to include Dick Grayson would make The Batman 2 too crowded, evidence that Boy Wonder rarely works in live-action.
As reported by sources, Reeves himself has expressed uncertainty about whether Robin will fit into the "Batverse" he created, though he hasn't ruled out the idea. In contrast, Pattinson is more openly excited about onboarding Dick Grayson for The Batman 2 on one condition. "[Robin] has to be 13," he said. "That's the only way I can admit it… People are so scared of it, but it's kind of exciting. I think it would be a really fun addition." Pattinson also noted the "Death in the Family" storyline centered around Grayson's successor Jason Todd, implying that he is partial to Robin teaming up with more than one incarnation.
For information, let us tell you that Warner Bros. announced Batman 2 in April 2022, which came as a little surprise after earning an impressive $759.18 million at the worldwide box office. Little is known about the sequel at this stage, but Pattinson is off to reprise the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman, with Reeves set to write and direct once again.
Fans are chatting amongst themselves about which of the Caped Crusader villains will serve as Batman 2's primary antagonist. The first film sets out the rise of iconic baddies like The Penguin and The Joker, while also hinting that the presence of lesser-known villain Hush may be on the horizon. Reeves has remained silent about who the Dark Knight will be face-to-face in the sequel.
As we have learned, Batman is now streaming on HBO Max and is available for purchase on the digital platform. The film will arrive on Blu-ray, 4K UHD and DVD on May 24.
