Xbox is a video gaming brand created and owned by Microsoft. The brand consists of five video game consoles, as well as applications (games), streaming services, an online service by the name of Xbox network, and the development arm by the name of Xbox Game Studios. The brand was first introduced in the United States in November 2001, with the launch of the original Xbox console. As we all know, it has been 18 months since the current generation of consoles started with the arrival of Xbox Series X|S and PS5. Despite all that time having already passed, both consoles are still proving hard to come by. That doesn't appear to be changing anytime soon as experts now predict the chip shortage causing that scarcity will continue until at least 2024. Despite that shortage, Sony has managed to sell 19.3 million PS5s so far.

As we learned from Sony’s latest financial report, it has been pushing its numbers from the first three months of 2022. 19.3 million PS5s were sold as of March 31, 2022. Two million of them were sold in the first quarter of 2022, a significant decrease compared to the 3.3 million sold during the fourth quarter of 2021. Understood. And somewhat predictable given that the previous quarter includes the holiday season, a time during which all console sales receive a significant uptick compared to the rest of the year.

The figure of 19.3 million has taken people by surprise, and while it's actually higher than consoles like the Wii U and PlayStation Vita, which ran throughout their operation, it's a bit short of the target Sony set for it. Sony expected an improvement on the 14.8 million PS4 consoles sold during the first full fiscal year of the previous console. However, Q1 2022 numbers confirm that the PS5 fell well short of that target, with 11.5 million units sold between April 2021 and March 2022.

Most notably, the PS4 continues to sell last-generation consoles despite being replaced, and more studios are choosing to have their games exclusive to the current generation. 100,000 PS4 consoles were sold during the first quarter of this year, bringing console lifetime sales to 117.2 million. This cements its position as the second best-selling home console of all time, although the Switch may soon overtake it. Nintendo’s latest offering crossed the 100 million mark recently, leaving its older brother Wii to eat its dust.

Sony had confirmed in its reports that the number of PS Plus users had dropped slightly from 47.6 million to 47.4 million. This section of Sony’s next financial report will provide an interesting read as it will provide an early indication of how successful the launch of the new PS Plus will be. The three-tier service, which launched in Asia this month and other parts of the world in June, will combine Plus and Now, providing a range of games from older consoles for users who choose the more expensive tier, Premium.
