When AMD released the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT, it was obvious that the RX 7900 XTX would be the more popular of the two. Despite being a solid GPU, the RX 7900 XT struggled to keep up with its more powerful sibling. However, with the recent launch of the Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti, there's renewed hope for AMD. The release of the RTX 4070 Ti has put pressure on Nvidia and may open up opportunities for AMD to reclaim its spot in the high-end GPU market. With the competitive pricing and powerful performance of the RX 7900 XTX and XT, AMD may be able to compete with Nvidia and win back the hearts of gamers and enthusiasts alike.

AMD’s RX 7900 XT is one odd GPU

The RX 7900 XT is a peculiar graphics card, as it doesn't make much sense to purchase it over the RX 7900 XTX. Despite being a cheaper option, the RX 7900 XT is often found to be out of stock, while the more expensive RX 7900 XTX is more readily available. Despite its lower price point, the RX 7900 XT still beats the RTX 4070 Ti in many ways, and is only around 15% slower than the much more expensive RTX 4080. However, the RX 7900 XTX offers a much better value for its price. This leaves the RX 7900 XT in a questionable position, making one wonder why it was released in the first place, and why it wasn't sold at a lower cost. It is unlikely that the RX 7900 XT will ever go out of stock, unless another GPU shortage occurs.

The RTX 4080 12GB strikes back — with moderate success

Nvidia's recently released RTX 4070 Ti is a powerful graphics card, but it is not necessarily a standout GPU or a good value for the price. Similarly, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT also falls short of its flagship counterpart, the RX 7900 XTX.

When the RTX 4070 Ti was first released, it was originally marketed as the RTX 4080 12GB and was announced alongside the already existing RTX 4080, which is significantly faster. With a $900 price tag, it was not a cost-effective option compared to the $1,200 RTX 4080. Nvidia eventually withdrew the RTX 4080 12GB, but it reappeared at CES 2023, rebranded as the RTX 4070 Ti.

Despite its high price point, the RTX 4070 Ti does not have the same capabilities as the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 in terms of ray tracing, and it does not outperform AMD's GPUs in 4K or 1440p resolution.

Given this, it can be argued that AMD should be thankful for the release of the RTX 4070 Ti, as it allows the Radeon RX 7900 XT to appear more appealing in comparison, despite its own shortcomings.

Not amazing, but mostly better

The RX 7900 XTX is currently the strongest graphics card from Team Red and it's main competition is with Nvidia's RTX 4080. However, the RTX 4090 is in a class of its own, leaving all other cards far behind.

When the RX 7900 XT was first released, it was already at a disadvantage as it was not as powerful as the RX 7900 XTX and was priced similarly to the RTX 4080. This made it difficult for the RX 7900 XT to gain any significant market share. However, the release of Nvidia's RTX 4070 Ti has made the RX 7900 XT and XTX more attractive options in comparison.

The RX 7900 XT is able to outperform the RTX 4070 Ti in 1440p resolution, and if you don't care about ray tracing, you can get better performance at a similar price. However, the RX 7900 XTX is still the better option, but if your budget is limited and you can only afford $850 to $900, the RX 7900 XT is still a good deal.

Nvidia's pricing strategy for the RTX 4070 Ti is also working to AMD's advantage. The RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 are both outrageously expensive, but the more expensive card is actually the better deal. This confusing pricing strategy for the current generation of GPUs is a real shame for those looking to build a new PC. Despite this, it is unlikely that this will sway a significant number of consumers to switch to Team Red, as Nvidia still controls the majority of the market.
