Horizon Forbidden West is an action role-playing video game developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. A sequel to 2017's Horizon Zero Dawn, it is a single-player open world game set in a post-apocalyptic version of the western United States. The player must travel and complete missions using survival skills, melee attacks, and long-distance weapons in a world overrun by a deadly plague, hostile machine creatures, and other survivors. The highly anticipated sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn is finally out, and players are incredibly excited about it. There are tons of new mechanics introduced to the game, like the grappling hook, swimming improvements, and the glider. Not only that but there are new machines that you will have to face. That is why this beginner’s guide will cover everything to help you get started in Horizon Forbidden West.
IThis article is for all those friends who are about to get their copy of the game or are waiting for it to download, so we suggest you check out this beginner's guide until then. We'll cover everything you need to know when getting started at Horizon Forbidden West. With that said, let's dive right in!
Horizon Forbidden West Beginner’s Tips and Tricks Guide
So let's talk about what you should expect when Horizon Forbidden Vest launches for the first time. You'll have more melee and range combo options, making the combat sublime. On top of that, you have to go through a small tutorial section that introduces you to all the controls.
With that said, let’s take a look at the beginner’s guide to help you get familiar with the world of Horizon Forbidden West.
Melee Combat
Contrary to what we saw in the previous entry, Forbidden West offers players a whole lot of variety. While the Spear is still similar to the previous game, it has been greatly improved. Melee combat is an incentive for players, and the game encourages them to use it.
Players now can use the “Resonator Blast” ability that has various effects. The most prominent one is the Valor Blast that deals area-of-effect damage and stuns nearby enemies. There are a total of 12 Resonator Blasts that players can use.
Skill Trees
For information, let us tell you that Horizon Forbidden West offers six skill trees - Warrior, Counterfeiter, Survivor, Intruder, Hunter and Machine Master. Marking these trees will enable Alloy to excel in that area. Depending on your playing style, you can focus on one skill tree rather than another. If you want to focus on destroying and subduing the machines, you'll want to maximize the Machine Master skill tree.
Special Weapons
Aloy's biggest feature is that She has tons of tools to help her defeat the threat in the Forbidden West. Raise the weapon wheel to choose from six weapons. On top of that, you can carry various tools like adhesive grenades that stick to enemies and deter them. You can line up your shot and hit the enemy's weak point when they are trapped.
By the way, you also have a number of special arrows in your inventory. And the best part is that these arrows can remove the armor on machines and expose them to take more damage. Plus, you also have the Spear Launcher that explodes on impact. These spears are especially useful against larger machines with lots of armor covering their weak spots.
Apart from offensive weapons, Aloy can also use Smoke Bombs to make a quick getaway if you find yourself in a sticky situation. These bombs temporarily blind the enemies.
Workbench
For the first time it has been seen that Horizon Forbidden West has a workspace facility. They are spread across the lands of the Forbidden West in various settlements. Players can use the workspace to upgrade their armor and weapons to deal with the ever-increasing threat. As the enemies you are facing become more powerful, it is essential to strengthen your weapons and outfits.
Enemy Types
Just like in the previous entry, you'll see that the Forbidden West has two main types of enemies - humans and machines. However, you will see that the rebels are attacking you this time riding on machines. You'll have to use a different play style for each type of enemy. On top of that, some new machines have been added to the game. Most notably, the Tremortusk, Clamberjaw, and Clawstrider.
When you play it you'll notice that the game sometimes forces players to step out of their comfort zones and adopt a different style to take down a large or complex enemy. This skill tree also adds points, so make sure you upgrade different skills instead of just one tree. If you're looking forward to adding some more flagship machines, we've put together a list for you:
- Tremortusk
- Clamberjaw
- Clawstrider
- Rollerback
- Sunwing
- Slitherfang
- Shellsnapper
New Activities
Sometimes when you find yourself exhausted from all the work, you can participate in various activities found in tribal settlements. You can test your strength against other human tribe members by facing them in melee pits or show your courage in the arena against big unforgiving machines.
If we talk about Horizon Forbidden West, then it has a bunch of side quests. These are quests that do not affect the main narrative of the game and are optional. However, this time around the NPCs are pretty memorable, and the side quests feel lacking. Doing these searches can collect more resources than you normally would.
Travesing the World of Forbidden West
And the best part for you is that this time around, the game offers free climbing mechanics to the players. Previously, players had to follow a limited number of yellow-highlighted edges that weren't available everywhere. However, the Forbidden West has changed that. Now, you can climb a lot of surfaces freely.
As I've already told you, its climb is still limited, and it's a nice improvement. If you're expecting free climbs like Assassin's Creed Valhalla, you'll be disappointed, but it's a huge improvement over the last time. Players can use their focus to see which surfaces are climbable.
On top of that, Aloy can use the glider – known as the Shieldwing – to glide after jumping off of high areas. This is an excellent addition to the game, and it allows players to get creative and find out how they can use Shieldwing.
For information, let us tell you that you also have a pullcaster, which is a grappling hook. This device allows you to quickly reach high areas and quickly flee or land on high ground. It's a great tool to reinvent yourself and get back to work once you're ready.
