95th Academy Awards Nominations Announced

The nominees for the 95th Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday with Allison Williams and Riz Ahmed revealing the list. This year saw many veterans and newcomers receiving their first nominations, including Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh, Barry Keoghan, Bill Nighy, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ke Huy Quan. Some of the nominations were a pleasant surprise, such as Ana de Armas for her role in the Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde and Stephanie Hsu for Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Angela Bassett received her second Oscar nomination for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, giving Marvel its first acting nomination. Brian Tyree Henry, known for his roles in Atlanta and Eternals, received his first Oscar nomination for his work in Causeway. This year also marks the first time in Oscar history that four acting nominees are Asian-American.

Cate Blanchett received her eighth nomination for her role in Lydia Tár, a film about a fallen-from-grace conductor. Steven Spielberg earned his ninth nomination for directing The Fablemans, and was also nominated last year for his work on the West Side Story remake.

Some of the genre film nominations were expected, such as Matt Reeves’ The Batman receiving nominations for Best Sound and Avatar: The Way of Water getting nominations for Best Visual Effects, Production Design and even Best Picture. However, James Cameron was not nominated for Best Director. You can find the full list of nominees on the Academy’s website.
